U.s. Ambassador To Chile - Ms. Congratulations to Bernadette Meehan on her nomination by President Biden as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Chile. Member of the Advisory Board, Ms. Meehan is the fifth member of the community to be nominated for a senior diplomatic role in the Biden administration.
He was a thirteen-year foreign service officer and served in a variety of assignments in Washington and overseas, including on the staff of the National Security Council as Senior Advisor, Special Assistant to the President and Spokesman, and previously as Director of Strategic Communications. Previously, he was Dean and Virginia Rusk Fellow at , Special Assistant to the Secretary of State; Special Assistant in the Executive Secretariat of the State Department, and in Baghdad, Bogota and Dubai.

Meehan, Ambassador Designate, has been an active member of the community outside of her service on the Advisory Board. As a Rusk Fellow at the Institute from 2015 to 2016, he co-hosted the 2016 Oscar Iden Lecture, "The Obama Channel: National Security, Communications, and Politics in a Complex World," with Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser. He also moderated a Distinguished Practitioner discussion with Joseph Cirincione, president of the Plowshares Fund, on "Policy and Politics of the Iran Deal."
Strongly committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the world of foreign policy, he has served as a lecturer at the School of Foreign Service, a member of the selection committee for the Ambassador Donald F. McHenry Global Service Fellows Program, and participated in the - Cox Foundation video series on diverse diplomatic leaders.

Perez was born in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from Marymount High School near Garfield Heights in 1971. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Hiram College in 1975 and later a master's degree in health administration from George Washington University.

Perez joined the US State Department in 1987. Most of his assignments were managerial in nature, with initial positions as a special assistant in the office of the Deputy Secretary of State for Management, and as an operations officer in the State Department Operations Center. Perez served in Italy, Spain and in Chile.
In 1994, Perez was appointed administrative and human relations officer at the US Embassy in Rome. He returned to Washington in 1997 for his seventh series and leadership duties, first as a supervising general service officer, deputy executive director at the Executive Secretariat; the following year as office director in the Secretariat staff office; and since 1999 as deputy executive secretary. He was posted overseas in 2001.

Two years later, he was transferred to Washington as the department's deputy executive secretary. Part of his job was organizing and staffing trips made by Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice. In 2009, Perez was named Consul General in Milan.
Perez returned to Washington in 2011 as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. He was named principal deputy assistant secretary at the bureau in 2013 and helped coordinate counter-narcotics efforts in Haiti, Ukraine and the South China Sea. In January 2015, Perez became principal deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of Human Resources.
On July 31, 2018, President Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate Perez as Director General of the Foreign Service.
Perez and her husband, Al, have three children, Michael, Caroline and Marisa. In addition to glish, Perez speaks Spanish and Italian.
