Never failing to build anything but model airplanes, this project was daunting to say the least. I think I made more scrap at the start of the project than I could keep track of, but every year I would come to Oshkosh and learn a new skill and talk to other builders and learn how they built a certain part. I would come home with a bunch of photos and notes and carry on. This is not to say that the project has low points - there was a time when I did not work for 6 years. With too many job changes to count and a growing family, Skybolt has been sidelined. Eventually my life slowed down a bit and I was able to get on with the project again. As it was built over the years, I made changes to the blueprints and corrected the errors that were in the blueprints. I added a better elevator compensation system and shifted the gears to the new style design. I also made some changes to the Skybolt builder's guide, such as the inner flying wires.

I've always liked Hale Wallace's plane paint scheme, so I decided to do a similar paint job on my own plane. I choose N747MJ as my N number as I fly the 747 to pay the bills and fly the Skybolt to relax. This project would not have been possible without the understanding of my wife and family who have always been there to help. I also want to thank the many friends and technical advisors who have taken the time over the years to help me or give me advice on how to do something.
